Been a long week

I’m sitting on my couch amid mounds of folded laundry watching a beautiful, warm, sunny Fall day drift by outside.

Fall is my favorite season to be outdoors. So, I’m typing that with a bit of regret.

But it’s been a dramatic week. We had a busy week last week, lots going on with Capt’s unit and we took my pony to a schooling show on Saturday. We woke up Sunday planning on a relaxing day around the house and running a couple easy errands. But the Monkey woke up from his morning nap feverish and cranky. Over the course of the next two days, his fever was up and down but it was getting steadily worse. So, Tuesday morning we headed to the Doctor despite their assertion that it was probably just a seasonal cold.

After an exam, a nasal flu swab, a chest xray, 2 caths, blood draw, blood culture and urine analysis, we knew that he had a significant infection, possibly in the blood stream. We could not identify the source of the infection, but knew it was NOT his eyes, ears, bladder, kidneys, or lungs. He received an IM antibiotic injection, and a ten day course of oral antibiotics. His white blood cell count was very high (29K) and he was miserable.

He is now doing better, but the docs still don’t know where the infection came from. It would just be nice to KNOW. To know if there’s something in his environment that I should address. We are hoping that the blood culture, which can take up to five days, will give us some answers. Today, he is feeling better and playing, but still not eating well and is sleeping more than normal. I’m getting a few things done around the house, but when Monkey is awake, it has to be all about him. Poor kid.

In the back of my head, I’m running through all my pre-holiday to do lists and I need to start checking off. But it’s just not that important compared to the sick kiddo. This is when I’m glad that I don’t work outside the home, because I am able to push things off and just spend the time with him.

Although soon, I’m going to have to go to the grocery store since I saw the Capt munching on a plain tortilla last night. 🙂
